Reviewer: Allison Martin Autism: Asserting Your Child's Right to a Special Education provides an overview of special education considerations for children with autism, with expert legal guidance on how to provide a quality education for you autistic child. This comprehensive resource reviews your child's education from early intervention prior to pre-school through the transition process from high school. It covers legal aspects of special education including IEP meetings, extended school year, least restrictive environment, section 504, and obtaining outside services. Don't be put off by the legal context of this book, it is easy to read and very well organized. The discussions of the various special education aspects for autism are based on practical experience. This is not a recap of the typical education system response! For example, topics include obtaining extended school year support and the importance of professional evaluations. Attention is also given to the probably less known but all too common problem of schools practitioners mislabeling children with autism as having mental retardation. Approximately 1/3 of this large format book consists of 60 example forms for most any contingency you might run into, such as requesting records, requesting test results and test protocals, complaints, and more. While most of the State case law provided by David Sherman was decided in California, the thought process behind these decisions and his comments will be of interest to parents in all 50 states, as is the discussion of the federal law and requirements. |
